Limb IK in Adobe Character Animator is the Chef’s Kiss

You guys know the Bones Song! The collarbone is connected to the– arm bone? Well, the bones aren’t exactly the same as a typical human’s, but Limb IK helps them move like actual bones!

Adobe recently added a limb IK feature to the already-impressive Adobe Character Animator software. IK stands for Inverse Kinematics, meaning that I can drag limbs in real-time without having to keyframe movements with traditional animation. We used to have to record very action, but now Limb IK helps with planning the bones and gives me live controls! This makes it possible to move your character’s feet, arms, and even the head with draggable handles.  With limb IK, it’s now possible to pose your character without creating a bunch of new art. This ultimately means you’re able to get more robust animation out of Adobe Character Animator.

You can totally have your character do some crazy Yoga poses but, personally, I love the fact that I can create subtle movements that bring an enormous amount of life to my animations.  Recently I set about the task of creating promotional videos for the Ship-It Show hosted by Greg Cipes and Tara Strong.  I love the heck out of these wonderful humans who have played some of the most iconic characters in cartoon history.  In the clip above, I used limb ik to create subtle leg movement to emphasize the body’s shifting weight.

I would love it if you could swing by twitch.tv/grifnmore on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday to check out our live show where you can pick up some Adobe Character Animator ticks while spending time with a vibrant, creative community.  I am always happy to show you how things work or to answer any questions you may have!  Be sure to Join The Club if you want to stay up to date on the latest news, tutorials, and assets we publish here on GrifNMore.com.
